The "Holes" or fishing spots are all marked.  You can wade up or down but if you have multiple people you can tell them to stay at Montana Beach etc.

Also,   You can camp here at Shady Meadows and they have a Bathroom(porta jon) , fish cleaning stations, picnic tables and firepits.    This would be a great spot to camp and it is very close to the city of Galax if you need to run and get something.

Make sure you keep the Gates CLOSED!!!

Several "holes" I did not get Pictures of........

Troy, NC NCWRC Boating Access Area - Troy NC Uwharrie Mountains

Troy Boating access area is a nice little boat ramp on the Little River in Montgomery County NC. This ramp is located on Bruton Millpond  almost exactly 1 mile above Bruton dam and gives you access to several miles of the river.  Some maps call this Mill Pond Hurleys Lake.  Also, parts of the Uwharrie Nationl Forest Border this Millpond.

I will show you some pictures of the access area and then talk about what you can catch in the river and then provide a Youtube video or two I have done in the general area.

***Note - you can click on the pictures to make them bigger.

The ramp & dock.  Single lane but actually a very nice ramp.

The Parking lot does have a good light

A good book to read has a chapter on this section.  Written by the Great Fisherman Buck Paysour the book is  "TAR HEEL ANGLER Freshwater Fishing in North Carolina" .  Chapter 17 is mainly about fishing the Little River in this stretch of river.  You can get this great book on Amazon  right here by clicking this link     https://amzn.to/3EQ3FdB

So what can you catch in this Millpond?

Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Bream, Channel Cats, Bellheads  Chain Pickerel, Carp and a few smallmouth are in here but they prefer the running stretches of this river not impounded by a dam.

I have another article in this Blog that talks about this river and the Uwharrie River  and their Smallies,  see it here  https://mackinncblog.blogspot.com/2021/08/smallmouth-bass-in-piedmont-of-nc.html

Here is a video I have on YouTube where we put in at this ramp and then fished below the dam

Thanks for reading and if you have info on this area leave some comments.  Thanks Mack

A Deadly Lure that Catches all River/Creek Species! - Hildebrandt Nugge...

The Hildebrandt Nugget Lure flat out catches fish.
Pretty much all species. My favorite size is the 1/4 oz.

This lure cast like a bullet and is practically snagless.  The 2 arms make it snagless so I cast this very close or into brush logs etc. The old ones were made of lead but the new ones are made with bismuth but both still cast a looooooooog ways.    Check out the link below to get them and the the video.

Get the Nugget Lure Here -  https://amzn.to/46aVX9q

Video using this lure catching Smallmouth bass will be added soon !

Sunset Park Boating Access Area ( BAA ) Rocky Mount Boat Ramp

Sunset Park Boating Access Area  BAA

Sunset Park boating access area is a nice little boat ramp in Rocky Mount , NC.    This ramp is on the Tar River almost exactly 1 mile above the Rocky Mount Mill dam.   This means that normally you are fishing in a Millpond which is deeper than the natural river.  I will show you pictures of the area ,  show the fishing decks and I will also at the end tell what can be caught in this area.   Here is a map showing the boat ramp (yellow cirlce ) and the dam which is a red line.

NOTE- you can click on the maps/pics and make them bigger

I will show some pictures of the BAA and then some on the water photos and then talk about the fishing in this millpond.

1 Handicapped spot

The Parking area is gravel and small but plenty of parking for the amount of users this place gets.

The Ramp like its name is in Sunset Park and Sunset park has Tennis Courts , Basketball courts, a skateboard park and other facilities.  Here is a close up picture.

There are also 3 fishing piers/decks located downstream from the ramp.  The first two are circled in yellow and the 3rd has a yellow x and is aproximate as you cant see the 3rd in the aerial view because of trees.
The one closest to the ramp I call # 1 then 2 then 3.

The first 2 Fishing decks you can actually park on the street right in front of them.

Note - these pictures were taken when the millpond was
down 4 to 5 feet because of repairs/working on the dam.
The water line would be where I have the Blue lines

Fishing deck # 1

#2

#3

As you can see from the blue lines at fishing deck # 1 you may have to walk around the deck to land a big fish.   2 and 3 are right at the edge of the water when the water is at normal levels so you would need a net for those 2.

This picture I have some rocks circled.  The bigger circle is just down from Stoney Creek and right in front of some huge houses.   These rocks are under water at normal levels .  Be careful in this area with a gas motor .

Here is a picture of where Stoney creek enters the Tar.   This is ~4' below normal but where it enters
the The Tar river  the depth takes an immediete drop.   normal level is at the blue lines.

Here is a picture of me standing on the rocks in the big red circle above.
These at normal level are underwater.

So, what can you catch here???    Largemouth of course and Alabama Bass are a
recent new arrival to this area.  I actually caught the first one documented by the NCWRC
and it was a hoss at 4lbs.  This 4lber can be seen on my youtube channel

Sunfish found here are Bream(Bluegill), Shellcrackers(redears), Redbreast sunfish, & Black crappie.

Catfish found here are Channel Cats and Flatheads.

Other fish found here are Longnose Gar, Bowfin, Chain pickerel,  and Carp.

The Ideal boat here is a Kayak or Canoe but a small Jon with a trolling motor would be good.
A Bass boat can be put in but I would NOT run the big motor. Just use the trolling motor.

Leaves some comments if you have fished here.

Worlds Oldest Longleaf Pine #Longleafpine

The Worlds Oldest Longleaf Pine is right here in North Carolina not to far from my house . Several years ago I made it a point to go find it with nothing more than a general location and a picture in hand.   I wandered around for about an hour and then I found it!   This Tree is NOT the biggest one in the area. But, it is most certainly the most gnarly looking one for sure.  Right now as of  August of 2023 this tree is somewhere around 485 years old!!

Here is the base of this Old tree

***note- you can click on the pictures to make them bigger***

Here is an aerial shot the yellow circle denoting the general area of this Tree

Here is a Bigger one that has to be over 400 years old.  This tree has a white ring on it which denotes it has a Red Cockaded Woodpecker nest/hole in it.   There are lots of these in this area.

Here is the video where I found this old Tree
