Sunset Park Boating Access Area ( BAA ) Rocky Mount Boat Ramp

Sunset Park Boating Access Area  BAA

Sunset Park boating access area is a nice little boat ramp in Rocky Mount , NC.    This ramp is on the Tar River almost exactly 1 mile above the Rocky Mount Mill dam.   This means that normally you are fishing in a Millpond which is deeper than the natural river.  I will show you pictures of the area ,  show the fishing decks and I will also at the end tell what can be caught in this area.   Here is a map showing the boat ramp (yellow cirlce ) and the dam which is a red line.

NOTE- you can click on the maps/pics and make them bigger

I will show some pictures of the BAA and then some on the water photos and then talk about the fishing in this millpond.

1 Handicapped spot

The Parking area is gravel and small but plenty of parking for the amount of users this place gets.

The Ramp like its name is in Sunset Park and Sunset park has Tennis Courts , Basketball courts, a skateboard park and other facilities.  Here is a close up picture.

There are also 3 fishing piers/decks located downstream from the ramp.  The first two are circled in yellow and the 3rd has a yellow x and is aproximate as you cant see the 3rd in the aerial view because of trees.
The one closest to the ramp I call # 1 then 2 then 3.

The first 2 Fishing decks you can actually park on the street right in front of them.

Note - these pictures were taken when the millpond was
down 4 to 5 feet because of repairs/working on the dam.
The water line would be where I have the Blue lines

Fishing deck # 1

#2

#3

As you can see from the blue lines at fishing deck # 1 you may have to walk around the deck to land a big fish.   2 and 3 are right at the edge of the water when the water is at normal levels so you would need a net for those 2.

This picture I have some rocks circled.  The bigger circle is just down from Stoney Creek and right in front of some huge houses.   These rocks are under water at normal levels .  Be careful in this area with a gas motor .

Here is a picture of where Stoney creek enters the Tar.   This is ~4' below normal but where it enters
the The Tar river  the depth takes an immediete drop.   normal level is at the blue lines.

Here is a picture of me standing on the rocks in the big red circle above.
These at normal level are underwater.

So, what can you catch here???    Largemouth of course and Alabama Bass are a
recent new arrival to this area.  I actually caught the first one documented by the NCWRC
and it was a hoss at 4lbs.  This 4lber can be seen on my youtube channel

Sunfish found here are Bream(Bluegill), Shellcrackers(redears), Redbreast sunfish, & Black crappie.

Catfish found here are Channel Cats and Flatheads.

Other fish found here are Longnose Gar, Bowfin, Chain pickerel,  and Carp.

The Ideal boat here is a Kayak or Canoe but a small Jon with a trolling motor would be good.
A Bass boat can be put in but I would NOT run the big motor. Just use the trolling motor.

Leaves some comments if you have fished here.
